John McDonnell pledges no more Mike Ashleys, no more Philip Greens | Phillip Inman


John McDonnell reflected the feelings of more than just the Labour conference when he said the free market must be brought to heel. To this end the shadow chancellor suggested a minimum wage of £10, with government support for those sectors that would struggle to pay. McDonnell is convinced it would mean no more Mike Ashleys, whom he singled out for breaching minimum wage rules in his Sports Direct distribution centres. Only a deluded politician would think he could sit round the table with business groups and hammer out a national pay bargaining scheme. If there is free money on offer from the Treasury and a new business investment bank, they will be interested.
